If you’re new to cooking with Wild Rice, here’s a simple guide to ensure it comes out perfectly each time. Wild Rice cooks differently than regular Rice. We leave the bran on our Rice, which gives it its beautiful dark brown colour and nutty and rich flavour. This also means it’s a tougher grain to cook and will take a bit more time. But follow these steps, and your Rice will be perfect each time you make it.

Monarch Wild Rice – Classic Stovetop Preparation

Ingredients

– 1 cup Monarch Wild Rice

– 3 cups water or broth (chicken, vegetable, or beef for extra flavour)

– 1/2 tsp salt (optional)

Instructions

1. Rinse the Rice: Give your Monarch Wild Rice a good rinse under cold water. This helps to remove any debris and prepares the grains for cooking.

2. Boil the Water or Broth: Bring 3 cups of water or broth to a boil in a medium saucepan. If you’re using water, add a pinch of salt for flavour.

3. Add the Wild Rice: Add your cup of Monarch Wild Rice once the water is boiling.

4. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer. This is where the magic happens! The Rice will slowly absorb the water, puffing up and releasing its unique, nutty flavour.

5. Cooking Time: Let the rice cook for about 45-50 minutes. Wild Rice takes a bit longer to cook than regular Rice.

6. Check the Texture: After 45 minutes, check the Rice. You’re looking for a tender grain with a slight bite. If it’s too firm for your taste, you can cook it for an additional 5-10 minutes.

7. Drain the Excess Liquid: Once the Rice is cooked to your liking, drain off any excess liquid.

8. Fluff and Serve: Fluff the wild Rice with a fork, releasing its earthy aroma. It’s ready to be served as a wholesome side dish or the base for various recipes.

Remember, wild Rice is not just a dish; it’s a connection to nature, a healthier choice, and a story of tradition. Each bite reminds you of the care and passion that goes into every harvest, bringing a piece of Northern Canada to your family’s table. Enjoy!
